Gala FAQ

Does swimming have a "season" like football?

Yes, the swimming season runs from September up until Nationals in July.

Why do swimmers need to compete?

Newburn is a competitive swimming club and competition gives swimmers a chance to see how they have improved over time (PB's) and refine their skills learnt in training.

What's a PB?

A Personal Best time for your swimmer.

Which Galas should they enter?

The competition Secretary will inform you of the gala's that your squad coach has advised your swimmer to enter and the swims they should participate in.

Why does the coach choose the swims?

Your child's coach trains them in the pool and they are the best person to know what your child is able to do in a competition.

How much are galas to enter and how do I pay for the entries?

Generally you can expect to pay between £4 to £6 per swim at a competition.  The Competition Secretary will give you a copy of your entry with the total amount payable to the club.

I've seen galas advertised as short course and long course - what is this?

Short course galas are those swam in a 25 M pool, Long Course galas are held in a 50 M pool.  You can use a converter to change a time from Long to Short course or vice versa.

What happens at a gala?

We have produced a helpful information sheet which can be found on the New to Galas page, which informs you what time to arrive, how a gala runs, what kit your swimmer needs to take and other useful information.

My swimmers name was on the results sheet but with DQ next to their name?

At galas there are judges ensuring that the correct strokes are swam in the correct way.  The DQ is disqualified and means that the judge has seen a fault in your swimmers stroke.  There are many different codes for DQ's and your coach will be able to explain what these are.

Why do swimmers get rejected from some galas?

All galas have an upper time limit for events or a "must have swam faster than" time for events.  If the gala is oversubscribed ie too many swimmers applied to swim for the time that is allocated, normally the slower swimmers in each event will get rejected from that event.  The club will have a competition programme for the year that will be an appropriate level for your swimmer, therefore minimising any rejections, however, until the gala closing date has passed there is no way of knowing how many swimmers have entered.

How do I know if my child has been selected for a team event?

The coach attending the gala will select the swimmers for the team events and notify the swimmers involved.

Who pays for the Team Events?

The club pays for any team entries.
